How do you get into sales?

Main Post:

I'm a tech guy thinking of switching to sales. How did you guys get into sales? I noticed there isn't a clear pathway where you go to college, study sales and get into the role. I would love to know everyone's journey

Top Comment: Go get jobs at crappy places that sell products that nobody wants and needs, this will show you cold hard selling and rebuttals. Unfortunately, these places lie a lot. Next, get a job at a mediocre place, learn more and let people help/train you. Lastly, get a job that suits you and your skills etc. I've been broke poor and sold crap to people. I never lied. I never cheated. I never scammed. I hope I never have to sell crap again. I've been very well-off from sales gigs, selling decent products, this is my preferred way. Selling crap sure did help when it was time to sell decent stuff! I'm glad to help in DMs.

New to sales

Main Post:

When starting in sales, what is something you wish you knew before staring?

How long did it take to adjust and start generating sales consistently?

What are some work habits (besides being on time or organized) that have contributed to your success?

Has or does your job affect your mental health outside of work? If so, how do you cope with it?

I understand the answers will vary from person to person and industry to industry, but I'm curious to know where my expectations should be.

Top Comment: Politics within a company matter. When you are a BDR, you sell to an AE. When you are an AE, you sell to your director. When you are a director, you sell to your VP (and so on)... When you are a CEO, you sell to stakeholders. Consistency is like training. 3 hours in the gym is a waste if you don't do it right. Highly focused on a 1-1.15 hour workout helps (come prepared for the training -> learn to prospect like a pro). Check your mental health and listen to your own energy level. Zombie style cold calling is life draining and you never will be in the zone, if you keep a schedule (yes, personal life always results in your outcome in work). You could call in volume, but can you deliver on point? (Most can't, when their prospect is picking up). Yes, you do sales because of the money. If you want to have mental peace, do Marketing. Personally, the biggest driver for me is family. I just simply don't want to think about what I want to spend for my beloved brats. If you are young, use money as a tool to discover beautiful things in life (experience). Don't be stupid and waste your money on a car or boat. Sharing experience is what matters. Industry doesn't matter, we are stuck in this role because we do it overwhelmingly well, but aren't able to do anything else. The money and sales as such is just a name. In real life we nurture and connect business (network). Sales people are capybaras. *Edit autocorrect

Where would you “rank” Sales Engineering as Career

Main Post:

If we’re being frank, within the western world,we typically judge people based of their profession and how prestigious or how lucrative that profession is.

Sales Engineering, since it’s a relatively unknown career path there’s really no preconceived judgments for it. Unlike for those who are Doctors, Lawyers, Professors, C-suite Executives. Careers that if you are in or pursue, many will consider you to be well-of and/or intelligent.

I’m curious to hear where you all would rank being an SE, is it within the same bracket of FAANG Engineers, Consultants, Accountants?

What would you rank becoming an SE as a Career path (1-10).

Would you tell your child/nieces and nephews to become SE’s

This just a discussion post I don’t actually personally care about prestige, I’m just curious to hear what you all think.

Top Comment: It’s 80% of the income of a sales person with way less stress and work, and less variable in pay. It’s just that, that last 20% is the difference between 200k a year and a 500k
